They also call attention to the non-discrete and highly dynamic nature of biological individuals (Rayner 1997). Although this is not our present focus, we should note that great evolutionary significance has been attributed to symbiosis (e.g., Sapp 1994). Symbioses have constituted innovations that have made possible some of the most significant transitions in evolutionary history, as our discussion of mitochondria and plastids made clear.
